Our Calculation Principles
Every calculator on this site is built on published, verifiable data sources — IRS publications, state licensing board fee schedules, NCCI workers compensation rate tables, and construction industry financial benchmarks. Where exact data is unavailable, we document the assumption clearly and err toward the high side of cost so you are not caught underfunded.
All results are estimates for planning, not guarantees. The goal of each tool is to help you enter a conversation with your state board, insurer, surety provider, or accountant with a realistic number — not to replace those conversations.

Direct Calculations vs. Estimates
It helps to know which numbers are exact math from your inputs and which are planning estimates built from published benchmarks.
Direct calculations
Profit, margin, markup, break-even rate, hourly rate, loan payments, and the revenue required to hit a target margin are pure arithmetic on the numbers you enter. Change an input and the result changes by exactly the formula amount — no hidden adjustment.
Estimates
Surety bond premiums, license fees, insurance premiums, tax brackets, and startup compliance costs use published rate ranges and state cost factors. They produce realistic planning ranges, not quotes. Actual underwriting, carrier selection, and local rules move the real number.
How State Adjustments Work
Each U.S. state carries a cost factor (for example, California and New York at 1.35, Mississippi at 0.88, most states between 0.90 and 1.15). These factors scale the baseline licensing, bonding, insurance, and labor components of an estimate to reflect differences in cost of living, regulatory burden, and insurance markets. The factors are relative multipliers derived from publicly reported cost-of-living and insurance-market data — they are not exact fee schedules. - Experience discount: Under 2 years ×1.1 (higher risk), 2–4 years ×0.95, 5+ years ×0.85

Data Sources
SBA surety bond program rate tables, national surety association rate filings, and contractor underwriting guidelines.
Limitations
Individual underwriters weigh factors differently. Bad-credit programs, large commercial bonds, and specialty contractor bonds may price outside this range.

- State factor: High-cost states (CA, NY, HI) carry higher application and examination fees

State contractor licensing board fee schedules reviewed annually. Includes PSI, Prometric, and NASCLA exam fee ranges.
Limitations
Some states require additional local city or county licenses not included in this estimate. Continuing education costs are excluded.

- Self-employment tax: 15.3% on net self-employment income up to $168,600 SS wage base; 2.9% Medicare on all income above that
- SE tax deduction: 50% of SE tax is deductible from gross income before applying brackets
- State income tax: Uses flat rate or income-tier estimates by state (0% in TX, FL, WA, NV, SD, WY, AK; up to 13.3% in CA)
- Standard deduction: $14,600 single / $29,200 married filing jointly (2026 estimated)

Limitations
Does not account for itemized deductions, QBI deduction (Section 199A), retirement contributions, health insurance deduction, or business expense deductions beyond the standard deduction. Actual liability will differ — file with a CPA.
Self-Employment Tax Calculator

Key Factors
- The 0.9235 multiplier accounts for the employer-equivalent deduction allowed before calculating SE tax
- Additional 0.9% Medicare surtax applies to net income above $200,000 single / $250,000 married — not included in basic estimate

Limitations

Data Sources
SBA startup cost guidelines, contractor trade association business surveys, Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational equipment data.
Limitations
Equipment estimates are for basic tool sets. Specialty equipment (cranes, lifts, excavators) adds tens of thousands. Commercial vehicle costs vary widely by age and type.
Insurance Cost Calculator

- Trade risk: Roofing and structural work have the highest GL and WC rates; painting and landscaping the lowest
- Experience modifier (X-Mod): defaults to 1.0 for new businesses; veterans with clean records may be 0.85–0.95
- State factor: CA, FL, NY, TX have higher insurance markets than lower-population states

Limitations
Actual premiums are underwritten individually. Claims history, payroll audits, and carrier selection can push rates outside this range significantly.

Industry median net margin: General contractors 2–6%. Specialty trades 5–12%. Overhead typically 15–25% of revenue.

Limitations
Does not account for taxes on profit. Does not adjust for project-level risk, warranty costs, or punch-list labor.

- Local rules: Cities and counties may require additional licenses or permits not captured in a state-level estimate.
- Tax specifics: Deductions, QBI, retirement contributions, and other income change your real tax liability beyond the standard-deduction estimate.
- Market conditions: Material and labor prices shift with supply, demand, and season.
Update & Review Process
Formulas, state cost factors, and benchmark ranges are reviewed at the start of each calendar year against the latest published data from the sources above. Federal tax brackets and the Social Security wage base are updated when the IRS releases new figures. Each calculator page displays its last-reviewed date in the disclaimer beneath the result. Material changes are documented on this page.
