Contractor Marketing Costs

A reasonable overall budget

Most established contracting businesses spend somewhere between 3% and 8% of revenue on marketing, with newer businesses trying to build a customer base often spending toward the higher end of that range or beyond temporarily to gain traction, then settling lower once repeat and referral business kicks in.

Where the money tends to go

A basic professional website with clear service pages and contact info is close to table stakes today and typically a few hundred to a few thousand dollars to build depending on complexity. Local search ads and a well-optimized Google Business Profile often deliver the most direct, trackable leads for local trades. Vehicle wraps and yard signs are relatively cheap, one-time costs that keep generating impressions for years. Referral incentives — a discount or small payment for referred jobs — are often the highest-return dollar you'll spend, because they cost nothing until a job actually closes.

Track cost per lead, not just total spend

The number that matters isn't how much you spent, it's how much each lead and each closed job cost across different channels. A contractor who tracks this can shift budget toward what's actually converting instead of continuing to fund a channel out of habit. Even a simple spreadsheet asking every new lead 'how did you hear about us' gets you most of the way there.
